📖 About Bhimashankar Temple

Bhimashankar Temple, located in the Sahyadri range of the Western Ghats, is surrounded by lush forests that are now a wildlife sanctuary. The temple marks the source of the Bhima River. The surrounding Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the endangered Indian Giant Squirrel.

According to legend, this is where Lord Shiva killed the demon Bhima and settled as Bhimashankar upon request of the gods. The temple was built by Nana Phadnavis in the 18th century in Nagara style, with later additions by Maratha rulers.

Temple Architecture

Built in Nagara style with a tall shikhara and intricate carvings. The temple has a large Nandi statue and beautiful wooden carvings on the doors. The sanctum has a self-manifested (Swayambhu) lingam.
