📖 About Mahakaleshwar Temple
Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain is one of the most famous Shiva temples and the only Jyotirlinga that is Dakshinamukhi (south-facing). The temple is known for its powerful Bhasma Aarti performed with sacred ash from funeral pyres. Located on the banks of Shipra River, Ujjain is also one of four Kumbh Mela sites.
🏢 History & Legend
The temple finds mention in ancient Sanskrit literature including Meghaduta by Kalidasa. It was destroyed by Iltutmish in 1235 and rebuilt by the Maratha general Ranoji Shinde in 1734. The presiding deity Mahakal is revered as the presiding deity of Ujjain.
Temple Architecture
Built in Bhumija, Chalukya, and Maratha styles. The temple has five levels - the Mahakal lingam on the lowest level, Om kareshwar lingam above, then Nagchandreshwar lingam (open only on Nag Panchami). A large Nandi statue faces the main shrine.
