📖 About Grishneshwar Temple
Grishneshwar Temple (also spelled Ghrishneshwar or Grushneshwar) is the last of the 12 Jyotirlingas. Located near the famous Ellora Caves, the temple was rebuilt by Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century. It is a beautiful example of South Indian temple architecture in Maharashtra.
🏢 History & Legend
The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times. The current structure was built by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1780. The temple is associated with the legend of devotee Kusuma whose devotion impressed Lord Shiva to appear as Grishneshwar.
Temple Architecture
Built in red rock in South Indian style, the temple features a five-tier shikhara and intricate carvings depicting scenes from Puranas. The temple has 24 pillars with figures of Hindu deities. The lingam is covered with a brass body.
