📖 About Ramanathaswamy Temple
Ramanathaswamy Temple on Rameswaram Island is where Lord Rama worshipped Shiva to absolve the sin of killing Ravana. The temple is famous for its longest corridor among all Hindu temples and the ritual of bathing in 22 holy wells within the temple. It is one of the four Char Dhams.
🏢 History & Legend
According to Ramayana, Lord Rama established this Shiva lingam after returning from Lanka. Since the lingam sent by Hanuman from Kailash (Vishwalinga) arrived late, Rama established it alongside (now worshipped first). The temple was expanded by Pandya kings and the Nayak rulers.
Temple Architecture
The temple is famous for its longest corridor in any Hindu temple (1,212 meters). It has magnificent pillared corridors, 22 holy wells (theerthams), and intricately carved pillars numbering around 1,212. The eastern gopuram rises to 53 meters.
